Could it be an ordeal in party to play the piano instantly, without practice after 30 years of inactivity? Yes, it is for my reflexes don't work so well. I need more and more practice to perfect it. Anyway, I did. I played one Church hymn, "How Great Thou Art".
Self-Made Musician
I am a self-made musician as inspired by my late father, Hilarion.
The first musical stringed instrument that I was exposed to was a ukelele. It was broken due to inactivity. I was the only son in the our family who stayed with my parents. The rest of my siblings were married and had their own family. The ukelele was played by me without direction, until it was totally broken.
My interest in music began to develop when one of my elementary classmates brought a guitar to our school and started playing it. "How I wish I could play the guitar too," I mumbled.
Every time I saw a person playing a guitar I stopped and listened attentively. My interest had fully developed when I'd a classmate in 3rd year high school, who was so talented in playing the guitar. I learned some basic guitar chords from him.
When I continued my college studies, guitar playing became my hobby and I bought one for my playing pleasure. It didn't last for I accidentally stepped on it when I placed it on top of my bed.
Song Composition
My interest in music never stopped. I even composed one song for my high school sweetheart and had written it in a musical piece. I drafted the notes I created from the piano of the Church.
Reading musical notes came naturally to me for my interest. I am very meticulous when it comes to work. And I am almost engrossed to any kind of hobby which I like such as writing, strumming the guitar, song writing and composition, among others.
Now, playing piano for the first time was to difficult and it's boring. I couldn't stay long in the piano brought by non-mastery of playing the various notes or keys on the piano.
"How Great Thou Art"
More or less 30 years ago, I played the piano for the first time to accompany the Church choir in our Stake Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, La Carlota City. Five Church hymns I tackled for the said annual conference of Church members from Kabankalan, Negros Occidental in the south and from Bago City in the North.
This Sunday after our services before lunch time, I went inside the Church cultural hall and opened the piano and played with a limited time of warming up "How Great Thou Art". My fingers didn't work well. Some failed to strike the right notes and the timing was a bit incongruous.
I request my grandson, Toto Bryan, to capture the momentous situation which I was playing the piano. I want to have it for a souvenir and for posterity as well.
I am very thankful for the Lord of giving me such musical talent which I value much and am happy about it. In such talent, I've served the Lord through music.
